The instructor is an AI, not a human
Every SOHK instructor (including the drill-sergeant personas and their voices) is an AI language model. No human reads or answers your messages as they happen. The chat screen shows an "AI instructor, not a human" label at all times. The personas are characters; they are not real people, teachers, counselors, or clinicians, and nothing they say is medical, mental-health, or professional advice.
What happens if a message suggests you are in crisis
SOHK checks every chat message on our server before any AI model sees it. The check looks for language about suicide, self-harm, or not wanting to live. It is tuned to trigger too often rather than too rarely, and it ignores common coursework phrases (for example a nursing question about suicide-risk assessment, or "this exam is killing me").
When a message matches:
- No AI model is used for that reply. You get a fixed message, written in advance, that steps out of character. It lists:
- in the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line);
- elsewhere, your local emergency number or findahelpline.com;
- if you might act on these thoughts soon, 911 (or your local emergency number) or the nearest emergency room;
- a suggestion to tell someone you trust.
- That reply is free. It does not count against any message limit.
- The session switches to care mode for 2 hours. In care mode the instructor drops the persona and intensity: no roasting, mocking, or sarcasm, only plain, supportive tutoring, and it repeats the 988 and emergency-services information if distress comes up again. You can end care mode early by saying you want to go back to normal (for example "I'm okay now" or "resume the roast").
- What is recorded. Your message and the fixed reply are saved in that session's transcript, like any other message, and are deleted with your account. A security log records only that a crisis reply was shown in a session, never the text.
What SOHK does not do
- No human monitors chats, reviews crisis replies, or follows up with you.
- SOHK does not contact emergency services, your school, or anyone else on your behalf.
- The check is automatic keyword matching. It can miss things and can trigger by mistake. It is not a substitute for professional help.
